The historic Michigan Theater, located in the heart of downtown Ann Arbor, is a non-profit organization that engages and enriches the community with a broad range of cinema and performing arts events 365 days a year.

The Michigan Theater is owned and operated by the Michigan Theater Foundation, which also owns and operates the State Theater and the Cinetopia Film Festival.

The Michigan Theater Foundation is looking for a dynamic individual with a passion for cinema and performing arts to join our team as the General Manager.

Summary: The General Manager is responsible for the overall operation and customer experience of the Michigan and State movie theaters in a way that is consistent and supportive of the mission statement and policies of The Michigan Theater Foundation. These efforts include proactively leading the theater team to ensure achievement of business goals in revenue, expense, profitability, guest satisfaction, inventory control, and employee morale. This role primarily reports to the Director of Operations and collaborates frequently with the Director of Marketing & Community Partnerships, the Director of Events & Presentations, and the Chief Operating Officer.

  • Oversee the Front of House team and ensure all Michigan Theater Foundation standards are upheld such as the time and attendance policy, dress code, code of conduct, and customer service standards.
  • Supervise all Front of House Team Member positions, as well as hiring, training, scheduling, coaching, and developing, and disciplining Team Members in accordance with company policies.
  • Responsible for ensuring that customer service is delivered with excellence and the appropriate triaging of guest concerns.
  • Responsible for helping to ensure the best movie picture and sound quality, which includes participation in regular observation scoring.
  • Responsible for ensuring that the theaters are opened and closed according to policies and procedures with the assistance of the House Manager and assigned Team Members.
  • Responsible for Front of House team scheduling and performance reviews.
  • Responsible for review, approval, and submission of Front of House team hours for payroll.
  • Prepare and deliver reports as requested/assigned, with the assistance of the House Manager.
  • Ensure the daily House Manager report is accurate for all sales, concessions, inventories, and miscellaneous Front of House supplies.
  • Support Director of Operations during live event operations by providing Front of House staffing needs.
  • Support Group Sales, Private parties, and misc. rentals by providing appropriate staffing to ensure excellent customer experiences.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Additional Duties

  • Attend Staff meetings & Town Hall events.
  • Support the mission of the organization by being aware of the various development activities and programs within the organization.

Supervisory Responsibility: This position will supervise FOH team members, the House Manager and temporary bar staff for live events.

Work Environment: The work is primarily indoors in an office environment within a theater building and may have some exposure to fumes, odor, dust, etc. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate but is occasionally loud.

Physical Demands: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk and hear. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus. This role requires sitting at a desk for extended periods of time. Extended computer use is required. This role also regularly requires reaching, standing, walking, bending, kneeling, stooping, crouching, crawling and climbing stairs. The employee will regularly lift and/or move items that weigh up to 25 pounds.

Required Education and Experience:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent with two years' college education in business or two years' management experience.

  • Experience with Ticketmaster, Agile and/or similar ticket vendor.

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite. Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

  • Demonstrated ability to work independently, as well as work collaboratively and diplomatically with others.

  • Strong decision-making skills, leadership and supervision skills, problem solving skills, customer service skills, technical skills, process and project management skills, attention to detail and organization, and energetic and driven.

Preferred Education and Experience: Theater experience, and A passion for community, history, public storytelling, cinema and the arts.
