Administrative Director, Neurosciences - Michigan Medicine

The Oversight Leader of the Neurosciences Interdisciplinary Program reports to the Chief Operating Officer (COO) of the University of Michigan Medical Group (UMMG), and partners with the Associate Chief Clinical Officer (ACCO) and the Senior Nursing Director for overall performance and management of the Neurosciences Interdisciplinary Program, which includes psychiatry, neurosurgery and neurology clinics. 

The primary responsibility for this management position is to provide leadership for strategic, financial, and operational priorities across their Interdisciplinary Program. The Oversight Leader will coordinate these activities with UMMG and Michigan Medicine (MM) priorities. The Oversight Leader will provide management and oversight for care delivery, space management, performance management, and clinical, operational, and financial performance. The Oversight Leader is also responsible for leadership and support of ACU operations and budgeting for the Neurosciences Interdisciplinary Program in collaboration with other aligned interdisciplinary programs and/or departments.

 Organizational Relationships 

  1. Direct reporting relationship to the COO of UMMG
  2. Partners with the ACCO and ACNO to effectively oversee, operationalize, and implement UMMG strategic and operational priorities
  3. Oversees ACU Group Leadership and ACU Clinic Leadership to identify, resolve, and appropriately communicate safety, quality, and care delivery issues
  4. Provides direct oversight of the Neurosciences Interdisciplinary Program Clinical Administrators (CAs) and/or ACU Managers. In partnership with the ACCO and the Senior Nursing Director, the Oversight Leader provides functional and operational oversight of ACU Group Leadership for departments aligned to their Interdisciplinary Program, and respective ACU Clinic Leadership
  5. Partners with the department leadership to align departmental goals with the overall Michigan Medicine strategy, and implements a strategy to support these goals.

Core Responsibilities Include:

Ambulatory Strategy

  • In collaboration with the department, develop patient centered programs and services within the clinics
  • Represent UMMG on committees and other activities ensuring collaboration and act as a liaison with appropriate Clinical-enterprise wide groups
  • Support the UMMG Leadership Triad in determining quality and patient care initiatives and improvements that support organizational priorities

Care Delivery

  • Develop strategies to improve transition of care between inpatient, outpatient, and home care

Collaboration with Centralized Support Services

  • Establish priorities, areas of focus, and collaborate with centralized support services
  • Identify measurable targets for performance improvement support services
  • Coordinate marketing efforts and initiatives at interdisciplinary program level
  • Collaborate with IT for required support services at the program level
  • Works regularly with support services functions to ensure operational goals are met

Operational and Clinical Management

  • Support ACCC and ACND in approval of care model requirements for each specialty, including roles, responsibilities, and exceptions
  • Oversee identification of potential revisions to the staffing model based on analysis of visit and productivity data from ACU Group Leadership and ACU Clinic Leadership
  • Develop strategies to improve transition of care between inpatient, outpatient, and home care
  • Provide oversight for regulatory compliance with CMS, JC, and CLIA, as applicable, operations of supporting functions (including identification of areas for improvement)
  • Support adherence to template and scheduling standards for access

Operation and Financial Performance

  • Monitor operational and financial performance metrics at the interdisciplinary program level
  • Oversee identification and sharing of operational and financial best practices to faculty and staff
  • Work with department leadership to secure faculty support for operational and financial performance
  • Communicate operational, performance, and financial metrics regularly to providers and staff in the ACUs
  • Identify & share operational and financial best practices to providers and staff
  • Present on ACU operational, performance, and financial metrics to leadership committees

Financial Planning

  • Oversee interdisciplinary program financial plan for upcoming year

Provider and Staff Performance Management

  • Recruit, select, and evaluation performance of Clinical Administrator and/or ACU Managers
  • Evaluate performance of Clinical Administrator and/or ACU Managers
  • Support recruitment and selection of Ambulatory Care Clinical Chiefs (ACCCs) and Ambulatory Care Nursing Directors (ACNDs)

Core Responsibilities

  • Evaluates supporting function operations, identifying areas for improvement
  • Perform Administrator On Call duties as assigned
  • Serves as a key member of the Interdisciplinary Program Oversight Team
  • Works closely with UMMG leadership and other Oversight Leaders to provide leadership for strategic, financial, and operational priorities across the ambulatory enterprise
  • Directs and leads multiple complex workstreams, including large scale facility, IT, program development, and clinical re-design initiatives
  • Works collaboratively in a team environment, continually addressing ongoing and new issues, while also exercising appropriate autonomy when needed to meet job requirements
  • Provides expertise and consultation as it relates to operations effectiveness, patient access, financial management, employee engagement, and patient satisfaction
  • Creates alignment between Michigan Medicine, Ambulatory Care Services, and Department strategies and priorities to facilitate administrative and operations management at a local level

 Qualifications Include:

 Required Licensure/Certification:

  • Master's degree in health services administration or business administration or an equivalent combination of education and experience

 Experience:

  • At least five years of progressively responsible leadership experience and proven success in the management of health care delivery and a history of successful execution of initiatives in ambulatory care operations or physician practice management
  • Considerable health care experience and strong experience in managing clinical operations/practice management
  • Proven experience managing in complex organizations

  • Excellent oral and written communication and interpersonal skills, as demonstrated by the ability to work effectively with administrative partners, individuals, and/or teams, across disciplines
  • Demonstrated skill in change management
  • Credible, assertive, self-motivated administrator
  • Confident with the ability to convey vision
  • Skilled at data management and analytics
  • Considerable knowledge of management principles, practices, and methods
