Assistant Projectionist, The Michigan Theater Foundation

The historic Michigan Theater, located in the heart of downtown Ann Arbor, is a non-profit organization that engages and enriches the community with a broad range of cinema and performing arts events 365 days a year.

The Michigan Theater is owned and operated by the Michigan Theater Foundation, which also owns and operates the State Theater and the Cinetopia Film Festival.

The Michigan Theater Foundation is looking for a dynamic individual with a passion for cinema and performing arts to join our team as the Assistant Projectionist.

Summary The Assistant Projectionist is the secondary operator for all film and screen events at the Michigan Theater Foundation and is responsible for ensuring the proper operation and maintenance of MTF projection booths and equipment when scheduled.

Duties and Responsibilities

  1. The primary duty of the Assistant Projectionist is to provide the proper operation of the projection booth and its equipment when scheduled to do so.
  2. At the direction of either the Head Projectionist or the Technical Director, to maintain and repair the theaters projection equipment.
  3. At the direction of the Head Projectionist to order and maintain a proper inventory of spare parts and booth supplies.
  4. To participate in regularly scheduled performance evaluation meetings as described in the Michigan Theater Foundation Employee Information booklet or policies.
  5. At the direction of the Head Projectionist or MTF Management create SPL or other digital automation format.
  6. Other duties as assigned.

Supervisory Responsibility Relief Projectionist staff when requested by the Head Projectionist or Technical Director.

Required Education and Experience

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Strong working knowledge of digital projection systems, networking, and TMS, with the ability to learn and adapt.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to organize and prioritize tasks.
  • Demonstrated problem solving skills and ability to handle sensitive information.
  • Efficiency, effectiveness, accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Ability to multi-task and easily shift priorities.
  • Self-directed with the ability to work collegially within a small organization.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently, as well as work collaboratively and diplomatically with others.
  • Strong decision-making skills, process and project management skills, attention to detail and organization, and energetic and driven.

Preferred Education and Experience

  • Knowledge of 16mm, 35mm, and 70mm projection systems (threading and operating platter and changeover systems; building, inspecting, and cueing prints for presentation).
  • A passion for community, history, public storytelling, cinema and the arts.

Additional Eligibility Qualifications An active and good standing membership with IATSE. (If currently not a member, can become a member upon hire)
