The Chief Financial Officer (CFO) will play a critical role in both partnering with NEW's leadership team to provide financial leadership, management and administration, and providing financial expertise to our clients as the leader of NEW's Financial Services practice.

The successful candidate will lead the day to day management of NEW's finances, ensuring accurate financial statements, forecasts and insightful analysis and serve as a strategic leader and partner to NEW's CEO. They will also oversee NEW's Financial Services practice, which includes counseling and educating other non-profit leaders through NEW's Financial Resiliency programming, as well as leading NEW's fiscal sponsorship, financial consulting and bookkeeping services offerings.

This position serves as a member of the cross-functional leadership team, collaborating to ensure organizational strategies and decisions are aligned with mission, vision and values.

Organizational Relationships:

This position works closely alongside the CEO, with accountability to the Finance Committee of the Board of Directors. The CFO will work collaboratively with the NEW's program directors and the CEO and will lead NEW's finance team.

This position will support NEW in the following ways:

CFO Functions:

  • Direct the financial strategy of the organization in consultation with the volunteer leadership of the Finance Committee, with support from the CEO and leadership team.
  • Oversee and lead the annual budgeting and planning process in conjunction with the President/CEO; administer and review all financial plans and budgets; monitor progress and changes.
  • Work collaboratively with the CEO and leadership team to help the organization strive toward meeting its Mission and Vision, developing strategies to ensure financial health community impact.
  • Ensure an accurate and timely monthly accounting close, compliant with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).
  • Analyze and present financial reports in an accurate and timely manner; clearly communicate monthly and annual financial statements, and oversee all financial, project/program and grants accounting in collaboration with other members of the finance team.
  • Provide the CEO and Finance committee with insightful financial analysis of results and forward looking revenue, expense and cash flow forecasts.
  • Lead all banking and external financial relationships, including the process to ensure adequate liquidity and resources are in place to secure NEW's financial strength and continuity of Mission.
  • Coordinate and lead the annual audit process, liaise with external auditors and the finance committee of the board of directors; assess any changes necessary.
  • Lead and administer NEW's Employee Benefits programs, including health and life, and retirement programs.
  • Ensure appropriate financial control practices are in place, updating and implementing all necessary business policies and accounting practices.
  • Lead, in collaboration with NEW leadership team, the design, selection and implementation of efficient business tools and processes that support NEW's Mission and Vision.

Financial Consulting Services:

  • Provide leadership to NEW's Financial Consulting and Bookkeeping practice, supervising and supporting the Finance Manager, and ensuring service excellence for NEW's clients. https://www.new.org/financial-consulting-bookkeeping/
  • Lead NEW's Fiscal Sponsorship program, including ensuring appropriate governance of applications and legal agreements and alignment of program participants to NEW's Mission and Vision. Lead ongoing administration of donated funds, facilitating funding receipt and disbursement, and prepare client reporting on a regular basis. https://www.new.org/fiscal-sponsorship/
  • Provide financial consulting to nonprofits either directly or in conjunction with other Organizational Development consultants. This includes assessments of an organization's financial condition, processes and practices, and recommendations based on best-practices and a full understanding of a client's unique needs.
  • In collaboration with an OD consultant facilitator, lead the Financial Resiliency cohort program, developing agendas, and appropriate content in order to provide expertise and financial education to non-profit leader participants.
  • In collaboration with NEW's relationship manager and other staff, lead the development of new client relationships for the Financial Services practices.

Additional Responsibilities:

  • Provide supervision, and support to Finance staff, leading successful accomplishment of department goals and each members' personal goals for growth and development.
  • Responds to prospective client opportunities through discovery conversations, proposal development, and follow-up activities.
  • Collaborate with all NEW team members to develop and assess client-focused strategies in line with NEW's overall vision and goals.
  • Pursue professional development and enrichment opportunities to stay current and advance knowledge in the areas of Financial Strategy and Management.
  • Provide ongoing support for collaborative partners for NEW; and host or attend special events as needed to support our work.
  • Play an active role in promoting and creating an organizational culture consistent with NEW's Mission, Vision and Values.

Position Qualifications

  • A passion for nonprofit community development and social justice in southeast Michigan.
  • A strong background in financial leadership, with minimum total 10 years finance experience, and 5 years as CFO or equivalent with an organization with similar complexity to NEW.
  • Bachelor's degree in a related field (business, nonprofit management, accounting, finance, economics). Master's degree or CPA designation are a plus but are not required.
  • Experience with nonprofit financial management is not required, but would be of significant benefit, with experience as an executive director, board Treasurer, fiscal manager and/or senior-level administrator with a demonstrated record of achievement as a significant asset.
  • Capacity for managing and leading people; ability to connect to staff both individually and in large groups; capacity to foster accountability; ability to develop and empower leaders; strong commitment to collaborative behavior and follow-through; and high emotional intelligence.
  • Ability to think strategically, anticipate future consequences and trends and incorporate them into the organizational planning.
  • Ability to think creatively about staffing and organizational structure and enthusiasm for working in high-performing , collaborative, constructive peer groups.
  • Ability to handle a variety of constituencies, manage multiple tasks and thrive in a complex environment with multiple priorities.

Technical Competencies:

  • Familiarity and comfort with Microsoft, Google Suite and working in 'cloud' environments is important. Internet access is required as is advanced knowledge and experience with Excel and QuickBooks.
  • Attention to detail and desire and willingness to do what it takes in a small organization is an important competency for this position.

Due to COVID precautions the role is virtual and in the future will likely be a hybrid virtual/in-person position. Team members can expect 40-45 hours/week including some non-traditional hours and some weekends.
