The Chief Medical Officer is the Medical Director of Donor Network West and is responsible for medical direction, clinical oversight and medical quality assurance.  They are responsible for ensuring that clinical services activities are based on established clinical standards of practice designed to achieve quality outcomes in the procurement and delivery of transplantable organs.  The Chief Medical Officer, in concordance with prevailing applicable rules and regulations, is directly responsible for optimizing the quantity and quality of transplantable organs and tissues made available to the community and nation; assumes ultimate responsibility for donor clinical assessment, management and the organ recovery process with the goal of maximizing the number of organs.

 

They oversee the Surgeon Qualification approval process, organ specific committees, the organization's research program, including data analysis and performance improvement activities; supports and fosters an organizational culture based on collaboration, support, constructive feedback and accountability.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Oversight of overall professional and medical administrative aspects of Donor Network West's activities.
    • Review, modification and ownership of protocols for donor evaluation and management and organ recovery and distribution.
    • Assists with the long-range planning and development of clinical programs and services in concert with the Chief Executive Officer, VP of Organ Operations, and the VP of Hospital Development and Family Services.
    • Development, with the Chief Executive Officer and senior staff leaders, of policies and procedures and guidelines regarding organ donation, evaluation and management.
  • Organizes and presents at various Donor Network West boards, including Board of Directors, Medical Advisory Board and Research sub-committees.
  • Takes an on-call role accessible to donation services staff and, as appropriate in conjunction with the VP of Organ Operations, to:
  • Assists in the review of referred potential organ donors and organ clinical findings.
  • Act with knowledge that clinical findings during donor assessment are conveyed during the organ offer process to transplant programs in order that the final decision for medical suitability of the donor and donor organ rests with the accepting surgeon for the potential recipient.
  • Assist Donor Network West staff as requested with surgeon questions, placement waivers and so on during allocation process
  • Assist, as requested, with obtaining specialized consults to assist with assessment of medical suitability.
  • Provide final decision on positive serology findings for family disclosure and hospital reporting.
  • Assist with Medical Examiner and Coroner's offices negotiations to obtain the release of organ donors in conjunction with the Donation Partner Development staff.
  • Serve as a liaison with transplant surgeons and physicians from the transplant centers, to ensure their understanding and compliance with recovery policies and procedures.
  • In conjunction with the VP of Hospital Development & Family Services, act as a liaison with physicians and staff from donor hospitals, to ensure their understanding and compliance with all donor management guidelines.The 
  • Creates and provides occurrence correspondence to appropriate parties including regulatory agencies (MPSC/UNOS, DTAC), physicians, Donor Network West Board of Directors, Donor Network West's Medical Advisory Board, and Donor Network West internal Quality department.
  • Participates in audits and interviews with both regulatory agencies and internal Donor Network West's quality department.
  • Participates in QAPI activities..
  • Participates in regular case review and suitability review calls with various staff.
  • Authors and/or reviews clinical policies and procedures.
  • Provides hands on training to procurement and surgical staff as needed.
  • Works with the VP of Quality Systems to ensure compliance with Donor Network West's recovery surgeon qualifications and assist with new fellow training and orientation.
  • Reviews Donor Network West's performance metrics including, critically, but not limited to volume of organ donors recovered & transplanted and volume of organs transplanted.
  • Potential for internal and external speaking engagements:
    1. Donor Network West staff meetings, donor hospital in-services, clinical donor consortiums, medical professional education opportunities, physician dinners and others as requested.
  • Provides guidance and medical advice on employee disease exposures and staff vaccination policies
    1. Participates in evaluation of vendors, e.g., Materials Management medical supply vendors, technology vendors providing clinical technology for clinical interfaces.
  • Acts as a spokesperson for Donor Network West:
    • Fostering effective communications between transplant physicians, Donor Network West and other interested parties.
    • Providing commentary and expertise regarding clinical matters with local, state and national organizations.
    • Attending relevant industry meetings and providing leadership in appropriate venues.
  • Reviews material produced by Donor Network West for publication on a national level regarding clinical aspects of donor suitability and management

 EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • Degree: Doctor of Medicine required
  • Minimum of 3 years' experience in an organ procurement organization required.
  • 3 years management experience in a health-related field; with 5 years in an OPO preferred
  • Possess valid California Medical License
