Director of Marketing - The Michigan Theater Foundation

The historic Michigan Theater, located in the heard of downtown Ann Arbor, is a non-profit organization that engages and enriches the community with a broad range of cinema and performing arts events 365 days a year.

The Michigan Theater is owned and operated by the Michigan Theater Foundation, which also owns and operates the State Theater and the Cinetopia Film Festival.

The Michigan Theater Foundation is looking for a dynamic individual to join their team as the Director of Marketing.

Summary The Director of Marketing is responsible for developing the strategy for marketing of live events, cinema, education, and fundraising/development programs at the Michigan Theater Foundation and for leading the staff in the execution of the strategy. The Director makes data-driven decisions based on a deep understanding of our audiences, schedules, and resources.

Essential Functions

  1. Develop and lead data-driven marketing strategies which adhere to the MTF mission and promotes sales and attendance to meet or exceed target revenue & quality goals. In collaboration with CEO/COO and marketing team.
  2. Develop and execute integrated marketing activities that drive sales and community engagement to meet or exceed target attendance goals for film, live events, fundraising, and various presentations. In collaboration with CEO/COO and marketing, programming, development, operations, teams.
  3. Provides supervision to other marketing staff including hiring, training, coaching, counseling, and disciplining in order to ensure departmental results are achieved.
  4. Develop, implement, and track annual budget for marketing spend and promotional activities.
  5. Accountable for department performance and successful implementation of sales and marketing processes and all marketing mediums including digital, traditional, promotional "trailers", public relations and paying special attention to in-house marketing.
  6. Collaborate with other departments such as development, operations or outside organizations that co- produce shared shows to provide marketing and sales support.
  7. Manage MTF's brand by tracking community recognition and awareness, ensuring all departments are using branded materials appropriately.
  8. Support the retail strategy for MT & ST concessions, swag, merch, etc.
  9. Act as a steward of the brand inside the organization and throughout the community.
  10. Maintain expertise in CRMs, social media, ticketing, and other business technology and suggest new technology/improvements when appropriate.
  11. Advise on best practices for the field of marketing and new data-driven approaches.
  12. Other duties as assigned.

Additional Duties

  1. Participate in executive team strategy and planning.
  2. Attends staff meetings and required events such as volunteer recognition, membership, and fundraising events.

Supervisory Responsibility This position has supervisory responsibility for the following positions: Marketing Manager, Digital Brand & Social Media Manager. They will also supervise any marketing contractors and promotional support staff as needed.

Physical Demands While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk and hear. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus. This role requires sitting at a desk for extended periods of time. Extended computer use is required.

Travel Limited travel is required to attend events, community meetings or visit offsite locations. Annual conference is New York in January is highly recommended.

Required Education and Experience

  • Bachelor's degree
  • 5-7 years of progressive experience in marketing positions.
  • Complex project management experience with the ability to multitask.
  • Mentor leadership style with interest in developing and leveraging individual team member talents and skills.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite and Adobe Creative Suite.
  • Working knowledge of current marketing and advertising platforms.
  • Experience controlling medium to large size budgets.

Preferred Education and Experience Affinity for the arts and community organizations

Additional Eligibility Qualifications A valid driver's license and access to reliable transportation is required.
