Finance Director

Our client has an exceptional opportunity for a Finance Director to become an integral member of their leadership team.  This position will report to the Executive Director and be responsible for managing the financial affairs of the organization according to generally accepted accounting procedures.

 Responsibilities include:

  • Directs the performance of all accounting functions and systems and related administrative systems, including general ledger, accounts receivable, accounts payable, revenue tracking, expenditure and cash flow management, account reconciliation, depreciation determination, and project auditing/monitoring. Maintains all financial records within agency policies.
  • Facilitates development of the yearly budget. Understands grant allocation requirements and can keep a running tally of grant expenditures to overall budget and pro-actively engages the leadership team in comprehensive discussions monthly on the status of individual grant compliance expenditures to overall budget assumptions.
  • Leads development, implementation and oversight of all agency financial procedures, controls and systems, or and guides any operational/program processed that are fiscally related. Coordinates and trains on fiscal procedures implemented by all staff. Ensures that financial internal controls and systems are in compliance with federal, state or local grant requirements, laws and regulatory bodies, adheres to GAAP and are of the highest nonprofit standards. Develops and implements financial policies and procedures to improve efficiency and to protect financial assets in conjunction with appropriate staff and board committees.
  • Ensures all reporting and agency accounting adheres to state, federal and contract compliance requirements. Manages all preparation of budgets, amendments, line item transfers, variance analysis, review of invoices, coding and report preparation. Maintains, updates, and processes funding allocations. 
  • Responsible for all fiscal reporting and monitoring. Ensure that agency financial statements, cash flow and budget reporting is timely and by established procedures to Executive Director, Board of Directors, and other appropriate parties. Works closely with the Executive Director to prepare financial data critical to the successful operation of the agency. 
  • Manages the audit process, the relationship with our external auditors and audit committee. Oversees and prepares for the annual audit, Form 990 and Form 5500, including initial bid, contract and scheduling of audit field work, pre-audit filing, internal auditing, invoicing, evaluation and documentation of related procedures and policies, on-site management and follow-up, and review of 990.
  • Serves as the primary contact person for our insurance carriers.
  • Provides primary Human Resources support for all staff with regard to pay and benefits.
  • Maintains and implements payroll and benefit records. Responsible for all payroll and benefit documentation, audit and production of W2's and 1099s, Workers' Compensation audit, 5500, other financial filings, documentation and oversight as related to payroll and benefits.  
  • Supervises, trains and coordinates assigned financial staff and volunteers, including task management. Orient and train all new staff on financial procedures and supports other staff in fiscal and grant areas. Responsible for staff training in budget development. Assists the management team, as needed, with day to day management of the organization and specific project management. 
  • Maintains, implements and oversees accounting software upgrades (QuickBooks), structure and integration with Blackbaud donor and events software. 
  • Participates in management team, staff and planning meetings, and staffs the Board Finance Committee meetings, as well as appropriate support for staff and external technical assistance needs.

Qualifications Include:

  • College Degree in Finance or Accounting
  • Understanding of and commitment to the organization's mission.
  • 3+ years progressively responsible experience in nonprofit or small business accounting required; prior grant accounting experience is helpful
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently while also collaborating and providing support to a variety of stakeholders
  • Experience in financial statement preparation, accounts payable/receivable, payroll and tax return preparation/review
  • Ability to analyze financial data in order to make recommendations and projections
  • Expertise in accounting systems including advanced expertise in Excel; QuickBooks software experience highly preferred
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills with the ability to work with diverse groups and individuals in order to achieve organizational goals and objectives
