Director of Development

SafeHouse Center is seeking an experienced fund development professional to join their leadership team.

SafeHouse Center is a non-profit agency that provides support for those impacted by domestic violence or sexual assault, including emergency shelter for those in danger of being hurt or killed, counseling, legal advocacy, and support groups. The organization is operated through funding from government/public sources as well as contributed revenue/philanthropy. The Board and Staff work to create resource development goals to support the on-going operation of life saving programs and education/awareness community education programs, and these goals are led by the Director of Development.

Under the guidance of the Executive Director, the Director of Resource Development will create and implement the processes and structures needed to grow and sustain the financial capacity of SafeHouse Center.

  • Reports to: Executive Director, SafeHouse Center
  • Supports: Board Development Committee, Executive Director, volunteers and individual Board Members as needed

Job Summary

Leads the strategic implementation of diversified fundraising programs including the organization of volunteers, staff, special events and donor programs, publications and communications. Internally leads, inspires, and manages annual resource development goals and multi-year fundraising plan/strategy to ensure sustainable programming and operations.

Key Responsibilities

Development Strategy, Planning, and Management

  • Creates and implements an overall development strategy and plan to ensure long-term sustainability of SafeHouse Center
  • Creates and implements strategies to identify and secure new individual supporters, fully leverage existing donor relationships, increase multi-year Board commitments, and elevate annual fund commitments
  • Hires, motivates, manages, and develops a high-performing team
  • Collaborates with the Executive Director, Board members, staff, and external stakeholders to achieve plan objectives and results
  • Assists the Executive Director to identify, cultivate, steward and manage a portfolio of current and future board and committee members and volunteers
  • Participates as a member of the organization Leadership Team
  • As a small operation, be willing to both oversee and directly implement each component of the development operation

Annual Giving

  • Creates and implements annual appeal strategy and tactics (i.e. direct mail campaign, or targeted solicitation)
  • Develops and implements a sound in-kind giving program to obtain products and services that benefit SafeHouse Center's operations and growth

Major and Planned Gifts

  • Develop and manage a strategy for the identification, qualification, and evaluation of major, principal, and planned gift prospects
  • Identifies, cultivates, and solicits major donors

Donor Relations and Management

  • Oversees the development and implementation of comprehensive, timely and innovative stewardship and recognition program, as well as appropriate annual fund, special gifts programs, donor recognition and events

Corporate and Foundation Giving

  • Creates and implements strategies to identify and secure philanthropic partnerships with corporations and foundations that reflect their marketing and business needs and as well as community engagement goals
  • Successfully stewards current corporate and foundation donor relationships, managing appropriate frequency of outreach, communication and involvement
  • Manage the identification and cultivation of new corporate and foundation partnerships and the grant proposal and reporting processes for these supporters

Fundraising Events

  • Lead the development team to plan and execute new events and to leverage existing and future events that raise awareness and to secure financial resources
  • Directs, cultivates, stewards and manages the identification and recruitment of volunteer leadership for all fundraising related volunteer committees
  • Coordinates and facilitates activities that will directly result in prospect identification, engagement, and successful solicitations, including advising the Executive Director and board members on the culture, expectations, and needs of development constituents

Development Operations and Reporting

  • Oversee the entire development business process, and create and implement internal gift policies and protocols from donor identification through collections to stewardship, ensuring efficiency and effectiveness
  • Utilize fundraising database to track donor prospects to enhance and advance prospect and donor relationships
  • Develops budget projections in conjunction with the Finance Director/Finance Committee and recommends fundraising goals to the Executive Director and the Board
  • Conducts thorough fundraising and expense analyses to determine budget projections and goals
  • Develops, monitors, and maintains an established budget for all development, marketing, and PR functions
  • Provides monthly reports on annual fundraising progress against goals with analysis of variances as needed
  • Develops an appropriate level of internal communication, reporting and tracking of results; maintains strong lines of communication with colleagues

Communications, Marketing, and Public Relations

  • Oversees and manages public relations, marketing and promotional efforts, including the development of collateral materials, promotional tools, media relations and advertising
  • Works closely with the Executive Director to formulate strategy and approaches for managing the SafeHouse Center brand and respond to Board, volunteer, donor, and media requests, as well as respond to emergencies, crises, or negative publicity
  • Coordinates/manages the staff and information flow for special events, fundraising activities, and programs
  • Participates in the development of communications and publications for external constituents
  • Maintains a comprehensive case for support for SafeHouse Center; makes a persuasive verbal and written case for supporting key programs and projects
  • Engages in public relations/promotional activities and events

Required Qualifications

  • Baccalaureate degree
  • Five or more years of progressively responsible development experience at a senior fundraising level in a non-profit setting with a proven track record in building individual, corporate, foundation, capital and endowment programs
  • Experience working in a multifaceted environment with proven experience in securing six-figure gifts

  • Ability to exercise a high degree of judgment and diplomacy as well as maintaining the highest integrity and ethics
  • Strong interpersonal skills and comfort with philanthropic community and major donors
  • Solid, persuasive verbal and written communications skills, including the ability to deliver inspiring and succinct presentations and conduct productive meetings
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently, as well as, a proven record of working collaboratively and diplomatically with others
  • Demonstrated ability to build a diverse team and effectively manage, motivate, and mentor staff
  • Demonstrated ability to think strategically
  • Strong business acumen; decision making skills; ability to set priorities; process and project management skills
  • Valid driver's license and vehicle
