Investment Accountant

The Michigan State University Foundation is a private, non-profit research foundation associated with Michigan State University, the premier land grant university in the nation. The Foundation was formed in 1973 as an independent foundation chartered to promote, encourage and aid scientific investigation and research at the university; assist with patent matters and perform trust functions for the university's fundraising organization.

Today, the MSU Foundation is focused on helping Michigan State University achieve its objectives around economic development through the commercialization of intellectual property created by its faculty, staff and students. Michigan State University is among the top 100 research institutes in the world with expenditures exceeding $700M annually.

The MSU Foundation manages a $400 million endowment, built from decades of licensing revenue. In addition to providing over $10 million in research funding to MSU annually, the MSU Foundation operates three subsidiary organizations focused on technology commercialization and economic development. These four organizations - Spartan Innovations (SI), Red Cedar Ventures (RCV), Michigan Rise Pre-Seed Fund III (MR), and University Corporate Research Park (UCRP) - are key partners in the Michigan State University Innovation Center along with MSU Business Connect and MSU Technologies.

The MSU Foundation looks to hire an Investment Accountant for the Foundation.

The Investment Accountant's position reports to and receives support from the Director of Finance who oversees the financial functions of the Foundation and its subsidiaries. It also involves working independently on special projects, or with other staff members on various projects and initiatives related to the Foundation enterprise.

Responsibilities:

  • Coordinate and manage all aspects related to the general ledger accounting for the investment portfolio.
  • Monthly close-outs, reconciliation, and analysis
  • Process K-1's
  • Correspondence and inbox management for investment funds
  • Maintain and process all fund manager requests
  • 990T and foreign filing preparation
  • Prepare and assist with reports and analysis needed for annual audit
  • Prepare reports and material as needed by the Foundation's Investment Analyst and Foundation leadership.
  • Maintains accounting controls by preparing and recommending and documenting policies and procedures
  • Other duties as assigned

Required knowledge, skills and abilities:

To be successful in this role, the Accountant needs to demonstrate critical skills and competencies, including:

  • A bachelor's degree from an accredited university of college in accounting, finance, business, taxation or related field
  • A mininum of 2-years experience
  • Ability to communicate well (written and verbal)
  • Organized, timely, and efficient
  • Ability to take initiative and manage projects independently
  • Ethical standards and confidentiality required
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook)
  • Non-Profit tax experience preferred
